I can’t quit smoking

icon Introduction:

Dmitry had been smoking for over 25 years. He realized the urgent need to quit after experiencing the first serious health issues related to smoking. Despite multiple attempts to quit using various methods and advice from former smokers, each attempt ended in failure, further deepening his addiction and exhausting sense of helplessness.

icon Psychological Context and NLP Approach:

Smoking often becomes both a physical and psychological addiction. To successfully overcome it, it’s crucial to understand the underlying causes that sustain the habit, including stress, boredom, the desire to relieve tension, and various social triggers.

icon Problem:

Dmitry’s dependence on cigarettes made every attempt to quit extremely difficult. His body and mind craved the daily dose of nicotine, relaxation, and solitude, creating a strong physical and emotional pull. The fear of withdrawal and its potential consequences complicated his ability to remain smoke-free for a long period.

icon Approach:

During our consultations, we focused on breaking down the smoking process into specific stages so that Dmitry could consciously control each one. We analyzed when and why he felt the urge to smoke and developed strategies to manage these moments. Mindfulness techniques helped Dmitry better perceive his internal states and bodily signals without automatically reacting by smoking.

A significant portion of the work was conducted in a trance state to more effectively access the secondary gains from smoking and find alternative ways to satisfy these needs through different thought and behavioral strategies.

icon Key techniques included:

  • Trigger Identification and Management: Analysing specific moments leading to the urge to smoke and developing strategies to handle them.
  • Mindfulness and Self-Awareness: Enhancing awareness of internal states and bodily signals.
  • Trance Work: Accessing and addressing secondary gains from smoking in a subconscious state.

icon Result:

After several months of irregular sessions, Dmitry completely quit smoking. He learned to recognize and manage his triggers without the habitual need to smoke and significantly improved his physical and psychological well-being. With the skills and confidence he gained, Dmitry embraced his new identity as a non-smoker and looked towards the future with optimism, planning for greater things ahead.

icon Conclusion:

Dmitry’s journey from a long-time smoker to a confident non-smoker highlights the powerful impact of combining NLP techniques with mindfulness and trance work. His success story serves as an inspiration for others struggling with similar addictions.
